Bonnie :: Naked in a Fishbowl

Bonnie

Bonnie grew up in Virginia and spent most of her adolescence stirring up trouble with Sara.  She attended SUNY Purchase and it was there that she met Sophie and Jean as well as her husband Greg.  Bonnie moved to New York after college and worked her way through the entertainment industry to become a successful casting director, working closely with high-powered celebrities like Robert DeNiro and Jude Law.  During her first pregnancy, Bonnie was also busy repairing her shaky marriage after her affair with Jude Law’s attorney.  Now four years on, she is a busy mother of two small angelic terrors, Mabel and Sadie.  She is on steadier ground with Greg, with help from their couples’ therapist, and Bonnie splits her time between motherhood and career, though the road is a rocky one.

Sara

Sara grew up in Buffalo, NY and her family moved to Virginia when she was 11. There she met Bonnie and the two were best friends until she ran away from home at 17 to join the "School of Life", involving a lot of experimental drug use. Now with her life back on track, Sara has been in New York for five years and just graduated NYU with a BA in Creative Writing. Sara is thrilled that her cousin Alice from Minnesota has just moved to New York so she can reconnect with a distant family member she actually likes. She recently had her first play published, and as a result of her newly found creative street cred, Sara quit her bartending and office-temp jobs. She now works full time as a personal assistant to an acclaimed playwright, which sounds fancy but in reality involves a lot of odd errands. Sara managed to get over the untimely death of her beloved dog Martini 3 years ago and has recently adopted a 12 year old hound mix, Gibson. She lives in Carroll Gardens in a one bedroom apartment which, again, sounds fancy, but in reality it's a glorified floor-through.

Jean

Jean grew up in Greenwich, CT before moving to Vermont in the 9th grade where she met Sophie. After her freshman year with Sophie (and Bonnie) at SUNY Purchase, Jean transferred to Vassar College, and later to Indiana University at Bloomington for her entirely useless Masters in Musicology. Jean originally moved to New York in August of 2005 for a job opportunity with a non-profit organization, soon to become the first of many jobs she would lose due to layoffs and bad attitude. Currently, Jean lives in an unspeakably small one bedroom in Brooklyn and, after some soul searching, declared herself an alcoholic in August of 2007.  She is complimenting her sobriety by teaching yoga by early morning and evening, and posing as a corporate paralegal by day.  She is single. Still.

Sophie

Sophie was born and raised in Vermont by her very liberal (i.e.hippie) parents.  She met Jean in high school and they got in a moderate amount of trouble together.  She went to SUNY Purchase where she majored in Photography, partied with Bonnie, and met her ex-husband James.  After four years of marriage, she crashed with various friends around the city but spent most of her time sharing sublets with Sara.  Professionally, her series of photos that depict the female genitalia as landscapes of the Middle East have caught the attention of many notable feminists.  And her series of a pregnant and troubled Bonnie were featured at MoMA.  She has also found success commercially but does not wish to advertise this as she feels it is selling out.  Psychologically, she is coming to terms with being too young to be a divorcee and too old to be a starving artist.  Her best friends, Bonnie, Jean and Sara are her family and her foundation.  As her friends begin to spend more time with their own careers and families, Sophie finds herself searching more desperately for happiness. She just came back from studying for three years in Italy and is excited to be back in New York with her friends.

Alice

Alice grew up in St. Paul, MN, and recently graduated from college in Minneapolis. She just moved to New York with her boyfriend Charlie, and lives with him and a roommate in a tiny apartment in Bushwick. Being new to the city, she is able to reconnect with her cousin, Sara, who is happily showing her the ropes. Alice currently works at an after school program as a teacher's aide, and is learning to appreciate life advice from her cousin Sara and her friends even if she doesn't ask for it.

Lucy

Lucy grew up in the very northern California town of Weed, and moved out as soon as she graduated high school. She studied Sculpture in Paris - and soon realized that New York was the city for her. Lucy met Sophie many years ago in the New York artists "circle of acquaintances", but lost touch, and is happy to see her old friend again from the art days. She waited tables and sculpted for a few years before meeting her wonderful husband Todd. Together they have a beautiful home and a wonderful son, Cooper. She and Bonnie met at the park with their children and became great friends over goldfish and juice boxes.

Chlöe

Chlöe hails from the stunning town of Lakewood, Ohio, just outside of Cleveland. Chloe spent most of her early years working at the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, eating herself fat, and wishing she went to Catholic school and/or could move to New York. She received her BA in Cultural Anthropology (and still doesn't know what that means) at Boston University, and then finally moved to New York, where she fulfill her dream of opening a bakery. She now happily owns a small late-night, organic, BYOB, fair-trade, specialty bakery on in the east village called Chlöe's Cookies: Ugly But Tasty. This is how she met Jean, a favorite customer who joins her in the evening hours seeking advice. Chloe is happy to oblige. She also finds most of her love life at the bakery, as she is still licking her wounds from a failed marriage at a very young age.
